JURA ON THE PATH OF ORWELL

A collection of original artwork inspired by a residency at 'Barnhill' on the Isle of Jura.  Batey's dramatic paintings give an insight into the remote landscape of Scotland's Inner Hebrides which surrounded the late George Orwell when he penned his final novel "1984".

2026 Exhibition opened by Quentin Kopp, Chair of the Orwell Society.

Michael Batey Artist Cumbrian Turner-esque Artist Cumberland and Scottish Landscapes

Characterized by dramatic Turner-esque vistas, and inspired by the emotive Scottish and Cumberland countryside in which I have lived, I seek to create paintings that capture the power and atmosphere of places, rather than replicate actual views.

In this way, I hope to evoke an emotional connection... one that holds personal meaning to every viewer.
